Abdominal pain is a broad term used to describe any discomfort coming from the abdomen. Other terms used to describe abdominal pain are tummy ache, stomach ache, belly pain, or gut ache. Almost everyone experiences abdominal pain occasionally. There are many causes for abdominal pain and fortunately most are not serious. However, recurrent or severe abdominal pain can be a symptom of something that does require medical attention.

When do I need to see a doctor ?
Since abdominal pain is such a broad term, it can be difficult to determine when to see a doctor. If the pain is mild and only lasts for a short time, then most likely it is gas pain and should resolve on its own. If the pain is severe and/or persistent or recurring, then immediate medical attention may be needed so that it can be evaluated locally by a gastro-entrologist.

What are the cause of abdominal pain ?
There are many causes of abdominal pain due to all the organs that are in the abdomen. Below is a list of some of the more common causes:
  • Acid Reflux
  • Ulcers (peptic ulcer disease)
  • Gastritis (infections such as Hpylori and irritations from medications)
  • Celiac Disease (wheat allergy)
  • Gallbladder or liver problems
